Press operation involving teach-in and playback control of rollers

The control sets predeterminable limits to the maximum force exerted by the roller on a chuck or workpiece in the direction (X) of the upper support, whose movement is effected by a self-checking spindle with reversible drive and adjustable torque. During the teach-in the contour of the chuck in the X-Z plane is recorded as a sequence of co-ordinates and stored as a safety line. The roller is driven with a preset torque against the chuck, and with each contact at maximum force the torque is reversed and reduced to a value which overcomes internal friction without shifting the upper support.
