An optical reader has an optical lens element comprising two lenses, one lens for converging a radiation beam to a read spot on a surface having a pattern to be read, the other lens for converging radiation from the read spot on a detection system. The two lenses are connected along a common interface. The element is suitable for reading bar codes. The reader may be integrated in an optical information scanning device for scanning information stored in tracks of optical recording media.
