An electrical generator plant has a pump (6) directly connected to an electric motor (19) bringing water up from a lower tank (180 to a higher tank (8) via a feed pipe (7). There is a valve (20) controlling the flow rate in the down pipe (14) from the upper tank. The valve control unit (16) acts according to the generator loading. The generator itself is driven by a Pelton wheel (11) at the mouth of the down pipe, using a common shaft. A percentage of the generator output is tapped off for the pump. The inside diameter of the feed pipe is greater than a limit determined by the down pipe diameter, the velocity of the water hitting the Pelton wheel and the available head.
