An internal combustion engine has a rotatable work shaft (13), a crank (37) connected with the work shaft (13), a plurality of cylinders (1, 5) having working chambers (38, 39), a plurality of pistons (2, 6) movable in the cylinders, and connecting means (9, 12, 33-36) connecting the pistons with the crank so that a gas pressure in the combustion chambers applied to the pistons is transmitted when a maximum pressure is obtained in the combustion chambers and a maximum lever arm of the crank is obtained so as to provide a maximum torque on the work shaft.
