A thread supply device for a shuttleless loom or knitting machine comprises a stationary helically grooved cylinder 2 and a rotatable two pronged fork 6-8 which winds thread, supplied via eye 17, onto the cylinder. Yarn is removed via an eye 18 adjustable relative to the cylinder. The device functions as a positive feed with yarn passing through guide in position 18', preferably however the guide 18 is positioned axially of the device which functions as a store. In a variant the eye is adjustable vertically of the cylinder. Accumulating turns of thread move down the thread but are frictionally retarded where they pass over the prongs. The resultant axial movement of the prongs and axle 12 against spring 9 disengages clutch 11, 13 in its drive. The fork may be driven by an individual motor housed in the cylinder, whose speed may be controlled by a yarn tension sensor pivoted at the end of guide arm 55. The forks of several devices in a machine may be driven by toothed belt engaging a pinion attached to shaft 12. One fork may be driven from another by gearing. The revolutions of the fork may be counted by a periodically closed switch, or photoelectric or magnetic sensing. In further embodiments (Figs. 14, 15 and 17) the grooved cylinder is constituted by a straight cylinder wrapped by a helical coil. The yarn is wound for positive feed by inclined prongs mounted in a body above the cylinder. The inlet and outlet eyes are adjustable alongside the cylinder in unison. In a similar arrangement (Fig. 15) for yarn storage the spacing of the prongs is adjustable. |
