The key has a moulded plastic head (14) with an internal passage (30) to accept the end (28) of the key shank (12). The shank of the key is fixed in the passage by transverse pins (32) that pass through (24) the moulded plastic head, engaging with notches (34,36) formed on either side of the shank. A compartment (42) is formed inside the moulded key head to accept an electronic circuit (40). This compartment lies parallel to the passage accepting the key shank. A moulded cover (46) clips in place to cover the electronic circuit. The inner part of the cover has a tongue (50) that lies parallel to the key shank. The tongue has a notch (54) on its underside to engage with the upper of the transverse pins when the key is assembled.
