The carrier consists of a transverse bar (2) with a support on each end connected to the vehicle roof (1). One of the end supports is equipped with a reel carrying a load-retaining strap and guide rollers, and the other has a receiver and tensioner for the other end of the strap. The strap receiver/tensioner (40) has a handle (47) which lies flush with the support's cover (32) when in its closed position and operates a ratchet mechanism inside the support, comprising a ratchet wheel (44) and two springloaded pawls (45, 46) with release catches (48, 49) accessible from the outside of the support. Once the strap has been fitted over the load the ratchet mechanism is operated to tension the strap, holding the load reliably in place.
