The door retainer for a door or window comprises a lever (18) whose upper end (19) is fixed by a pivot (21) which is itself mounted to slide in a groove (22) in the rebate of the door frame. The lower end of this lever (23) is intended to cooperage with a hook (24) mounted on the opening door panel. There is an elastic support mounted on the upper end of the lever (18) to act upon it. The lever itself has a symmetrical configuration w.r.t. its median vertical plane , and also includes an index device which ensures that the elastic support is able to urge the lever back to its vertical position. The structure of the lever is such that it is reversible.
