Cyclic alcohols are prepared by hydrating compounds of general formulae <FORM:1086503/C2/1> <FORM:1086503/C2/2> <FORM:1086503/C2/3> wherein each R1 is hydrogen or an organic radical linked to the cyclic nucleus through a carbon atom of the radical, but R1 cannot be an alkoxyl group, in the presence of water at 50 DEG to 200 DEG C. and in the presence of a synthetic cation exchange resin catalyst consisting of an aryl hydrocarbon skeleton having mineral acid groups attached thereto. R1 may be alkyl, alkenyl, aryl, cycloalkyl, cycloalkenyl carbonyl, cyano or acyl and the other valences not occupied by R1 may be satisfied by any substituent which does not alter the characteristics of the double bond susceptible to hydration and many examples are given. The cation exchange resins used are conventional sulphonated or phosphonated synthetic aryl cation exchange resins and catalysts having macroreticular structures are also used. Preferred catalysts are sulphonated cross-link polymers of styrene and copolymers of styrene and divinyl benzene and pressures of 0 to 150 p.s.i.g. may be used. The reaction may be carried out by batch or continuous methods and in a preferred method the starting material and water mixture is vaporized and circulated around the exterior of a vertical tubular reactor containing a fixed bed of catalyst material, thereby heating the catalyst through which the condensate percolates downwardly, the product being taken off at the bottom of the reactor. |
