[Also in Division C1] Polymer coatings are produced on suitable substrates by (a) dissolving a polymerizable material in an inert solvent and (b) bringing this solution into contact with a substrate which is capable of forming a solution with the polymerizable material, is an initiator or co-reactant for polymerization of the polymerizable material and is insoluble in and inert to the solvent, so that the polymerizable material is polymerized. The solvent may be a paraffin, a naphthenic hydrocarbon or a halocarbon, e.g. n-hexadecane, CCl 4 or a petroleum spray base distillate bp. 185-200‹ C. hydrogenated and extracted with H 2 SO 4 and the concentration of the solution may be 0À1-10% by weight. The contact temperature may be 0-200‹ C. In one embodiment oxidant particles for a rocket propellant are encapsulated in aziridine polymers. Oxidants specified are ammonium perchlorate and the perchlorates and nitrates of lithium and sodium and aziridine monomers specified are: tris - (2 - methylazidinyl) phosphine oxide, tris - (1 - aziridinyl) phosphine oxide, tris-[2- (3 - ethyleniminobutyryloxy) ethyl] amine, tris - [2 - (3 - propyleniminobutyryloxy) ethyl] amine, tris - (2 - ethylaziridinyl) - S - triazine, tris - (2 - methylaziridinyl) - S - triazine, bis - (2- methylaziridinylethyl) sulphone, and 2,2,4,4- hexakis - (2 - methylaziridinyl) - 2,4,6 - triphospha-1,3,5-triazine. The oxidant may include a combustion modifier, e.g. ferric 2-ethylhexoate or ferric acetylacetonate. In another embodiment, the coating material is an epoxy-compound. For example KI and ammonium perchlorate are coated respectively with the triglycidyl ester of oleic acid trimer and 2,6-bis- (2,3-epoxypropyl) phenyl glycidyl ether. Rocket propellants disclosed have the following compositions: (11) carboxy-terminated polyester of neopentylene glycol and azelaic acid, ammonium perchlorate coated with tris-(2-methylaziridyl) phosphine oxide polymer, trimethylolethane trinitrate and aluminium, (12) carboxyterminated polybutadiene, 2,6-bis-(2,3-epoxypropyl) phenyl glycidyl ether, 2-butoxyethyl pelargonate, chromium 2-ethyl hexoate and ammonium perchlorate coated with tris-(2- methylaziridinyl) phosphine oxide polymer and (13) carboxy-terminated polyisobutylene, 2,6-bis- (2,3 - epoxypropyl) phenyl glycidyl ether, dimethyl aniline or cetyl dimethyl benzylammonium chloride and ammonium perchlorate coated with tris-(2-methylaziridinyl) phosphine oxide polymer. |
