Prepn. of a material contg. a substrate with coating(s) of pigment(s) of formula : A(D1)(D2)x (I); or Pc (II) or their derivs. on the surface comprises: (a) coating the substrate with a soln. or melt of latent pigment(s) of formula A(D3)(D4)x (III); or deriv. of this or latent pigment(s) of formula (IV) or a position isomer or deriv. of this; and (b) partial or complete conversion of (II) or (IV) to the insol. pigment form by eliminating the D3 and D4 gps. and replacing them by H or eliminating the L1 and L2 gps: A = a quinacridone, anthraquinone, perylene, indigo, azo, quinophthalone, isoindolinone, isoindoline, dioxazine, phthalocyanine or diketopyrrolopyrrole chromophore gp. with D1 and x D2 or D3 and x D4 attached to N atoms and 0, 1 or 2 D1, D2, D3 or D4 attached to each N atom in A; D1, D2 = H; x = 0 - 4; Pc = a phthalocyanine chromophore; D3, D4 = -CO-O-(X)m-(Y)n-(CO)p-C6H3R1R2, -CO-O-(X)m-(Z)n-Q or -CO-O-NR3R4; X = 1 - 14 C alkylene, 2 - 14 C alkenylene, 2 - 14 C alkynylene or 4 - 12 C cycloalk(en)ylene; Y = -V-(CH2)q; Z = -V-(CH2)r; V = 3 - 6 C cycloalkylene; q = 1 - 16; r = 0 - 1; R1, R2 = H, 1 - 6 C alkyl, 1 - 4 C alkoxy, halogen, CN, NO2, or phenyl or phenoxy, opt. substd. by 1 - 4 C alkyl, 1 - 4 C alkoxy or halogen; Q = H, CN, Si(R1)3, -C(R5)(R6)(R7), -SO2-C6H3R1R2, -SO2R8, SR8, -CH(R9)2, pyridyl, pyrimidin-4-yl, thienyl, furyl, fluoren-9-yl, naphth-1-yl, 2,7-di-tert.-butyl-10,10-dioxo-thioxanthen-9-yl or phenanthr-9-yl; R8 = 1 - 4 C alkyl; R9 = phenyl, opt. substd. by 1 - 4 C alkyl, 1 - 4 C alkoxy or halogen; R3, R4 = H, 1 - 18 C alkyl or -(X)m-(Y)n-C6H3R1R2, or NR3R4-pyrrolidinyl, piperidinyl or morpholinyl; L1, L2 = halogen, 1 - 18 C alkoxy, 2 - 18 C dialkylamino, 1 - 18 C cycloalkylamino, 1 - 6 C alkylpiperidino or morpholino; M = H2 or an at least divalent metal atom. Also claimed is material with a uniform pigment coating on pt. of its surface and none on the rest.
