<p>1288226 Artificial skiing surface BUNKERRAMO CORP 8 Sept 1969 [31 Jan 1969] 44306/69 Heading A6D [Also in Division Dl] An artificial skiing surface comprises a pile fabric including a base and fibres projecting from the base to form a pile 0.5 to 2 inches high, the free end portions of at least some of the pile fibres being permanently bent over in a common direction and substantially parallel to the base. The fabric may be laid upon a slope, with the bent over ends extending down the slope, or moved beneath a stationary skier. The fabric may comprise a sliver knit pile fabric including a backing of knitted stitches with which the pile fibres may be interlocked, e.g. by bonding with a filled acrylonitrile polymer material. The base may include a resilient layer, e.g. of vinyl resin or foamed materials, bonded to the sliver knit pile fabric. The pile fibres may be artificial fibres, e.g. nylon, polyester, polypropylene or acrylic fibres, of 30 to 150 denier, preferably at least 60 denier, and may be staple fibres 1.5 to 4 inches long. The pile fibres may be a blend of long and short fibres which may be of different denier, the pile having a predominant number of short fibres and a face formed predominantly by the bent over ends of the long fibres. The pile density may be 1.5 to 3.5 pounds, and preferably at least 2 pounds, of available pile fibre per square yard. Available pile fibre is defined as the fibre obtained upon shearing pile fibre from the completed fabric as close as possible to the base. The pile may be of substantially uniform density. Portions of the pile may be omitted, e.g. to form rows of pile fibre extending longitudinally and transverse of the fabric, or to form a checkerboard pattern. The pile is preferably at least one inch high. The bent over pile ends may be polished.</p> |
