PURPOSE: To suppress deposition of a magnetic carrier and to maintain enough developing property without disturbing a toner image already formed on a latent image carrier body in the process of a multicolor image forming. CONSTITUTION: This developing method is a noncontact two-component developing method using a developer carrying body 1 consisting of a rotatable nonmagnetic sleeve 2 and a magnetic member 3 fixed in the sleeve 2. In an area near the upstream side from the effective developing area (m) or in at least a part of the effective developing area (m), such an area (k) is included that the carrier chain of a developer G is slid along the circumference direction of the developer carrying body 1. Further, in at least a part of the effective developing area (m), such an area is present that satisfies the relation of|Br|/|B|>=0.5 and|Bt|/|B|<=0.5. The inner product Fr between ib andΔB/Δr satisfies Fr<=-200 in the area satisfying|Br|/|B|>=0.5, and Fr<=-50 in other area in the effective developing area m. B is the magnetic flux density on the surface of the nonmagnetic sleeve, Br is the r-component of the magnetic flux density B, and Bt is the t-component of the magnetic flux density B.
