PURPOSE: To maintain the performance of a three way catalyst in a rich region near a stoichiometric region as in the case of conventional one and to control the generation of ammonia. CONSTITUTION: A catalyst is composed of a porous carrier, at least one kind of alkali metal or alkaline earth metal which is supported by the carrier, catalytic noble metal, and Mo and/or Mo-oxide. An active point is formed by the cooperative action between Mo and/or Mo-oxide and the catalytic noble metal, and the electronic state of the active point is changed by alkali metal or alkaline earth metal. As a result, the reaction selectivity of NO on the active point is changed to control the generation of NH3 . |
