The spring retainer (100) of a valve spring (101) is keyed onto a valve rod (102) by means of two half cones (103,104) inserted in a conical bore (107) between the retainer and the rod. There are internal seals which are housed in corresponding grooves in the rod. The lower end of a sleeve (1) forms a support (4) for the dish. Near this support is a housing (5) for the intermediate half cones on the periphery of which are parts (6) which engender a radial force field. A tappet (7), sliding in a sleeve bore (3), has a lower edge which is supported on the half cones held in the sleeve housing. A piston (15) sliding in an axial bore (16) in the tappet has a lower edge supported on the valve rod end. Connecting parts (24) in radial holes in the tappet are radially displaced between an external position, in which they engage a notch (26) in the sleeve, and an internal position, in which they engage a notch (27) in the piston.
