Articles (23) are wrapped in a tubular bag (52) made from continuous film (27) which is supplied over a guide (31) from a roll (24). The film is folded over guides (34, 36) to form a tube (29) open along one side into which the article (23) is placed by a first conveyor (13). A welding and severing device (46) cuts off the bag (52) and welds a transverse seam (48) across at least part of the width before the article passes to a second conveyor (14). An actuating mechanism adjusts the height of the upper shoulder (32) of the folding guide (34) above the first conveyor (13) and/or the welding and seaming device (46) and/or the film guide (31) and/or the side welding arrangement (51) to suit the height of the article (23).
