In a pairing of first and second tufting needles (6, 13; 18, 23) for use in three-shafted tufting, wherein the first and second tufting needles (6, 13; 18, 23) can by means of their pistons be directly or indirectly secured to a needle bar (1, 10; 25, 26) of a tufting machine, in each case forming a row, and wherein at least the shanks of all these tufting needles (6, 13; 18, 23) run parallel to one another, the invention provides that when the two needles bars are moved one upon the other, these shanks can move into a common needle row, thus making it possible to create additional pattern effects in tufting. The first tufting needles (6, 13; 18, 23) then, can be straight, while the second tufting needles (6, 13; 18, 23) have an offset parallel shank due to crimping away from the piston of these tufting needles (6, 13; 18, 23) - and so when mounted, towards the first tufting needles (6, 13; 18, 23). However, it is also possible that both the first and the second tufting needles (6, 13; 18, 23) have offset parallel shanks crimped away from the pistons of these tufting needles (6, 13; 18, 23) - and so when mounted, toward the corresponding tufting needles (6, 13; 18, 23). Further, the first tufting needles (6, 13; 18, 23) can be straight, while with the second tufting needles (6, 13; 18, 23) the shank forms an angle of 70-110 DEG .
