The tape is taken of a coil by a pull-in mechanism and fed to a tape magazine, from which it is placed round the package and tightened by a tape transporter and guide. The tensioned loop is closed by a securing device. Behind the pull-in mechanism and in front of the tape magazine is located a deflector in the tape guide. In the first position the deflector feeds the tape directly to the tape transporter, while in the second position the tape is diverted into the magazine.
