A vehicle where either the front (1) or the rear (2) wheels are driven by the engine(3) and the other pair driven by an electric motor (5) has a device (5) to measure the friction coefft of the road surface and means (10) to control the electric motor when the friction coefft is less than a preset value. The measuring device comprises a unit to determine the driving force of the engine, a unit to determine the slip of the wheels and a unit to determine the friction coefft by comparison of these values. The electric moor is a DC commutator motor. The coefft is measured immediately before the brakes are operated.
