An ink source information encryption device for an ink delivery system for a printer having a print carriage and a controller therein comprising an ink source and an encryption device (54a-54d) coupled to the ink source (50a-50d). A controller (108) is coupled to the encryption device and responsive to the encryption device for selectively enabling and disabling the print carriage. The encryption device has storage therein for storing information programmed therein by the controller and the information can be stored in a coded format and also on a real-time basis.
