<p>Process: X and, Y = Cl, alkylmercapto, alkylsulphinyl, alkylsulphonyl(C5-16), cyclohexyl-mercapto, cyclohexylsulphinyl or cyclohexylsulphonyl. Either X or Y = Cl. R = alkyl (C5-16) or cyclohexyl. (I) have antimicrobial properties and may be used as intermediates for pesticides. 0.33 mol. of 2.4.5-trichloro n-octylmercapto-benzene are shaken with 0.75 mol NaOH in 300 ml methanol for 12 hrs. at 165 deg. C in an autoclave. The solution is filtered and the filtrate is evaporated. The residue is dissolved in 500 ml water, filtered, the filtrate is diluted with dilute H2SO4; the phenol is taken up in methylene chloride and the solution is worked up. The crude 2.5-dichloro 4-n-octylmercaptophenol distils as main fraction at 155-160 deg. C at 0.02 Torr. Yield 83.4%.</p> |
