Olefins are reacted with CO and H2 at 200-700 atm. and 150-230 degrees C using a gp. VIII metal catalyst modified with a phosphine R-PH2 or H2P-R'-PH2 (where R = alkyl opt. contg. 1-2 inert substituents; R' = C4-10 alkylene). Mainly straight chain aldehydes are produced (pref. from C3-10 alpha-olefins) and production of alcohols is reduced.
