The page trimmer for collectively shearing the free edges of an assembled or bound book during the final stages of its production forms part of a machine complex. This comprises a feeder conveyor, transfer station (12), storage magazine (18) and a shearing unit (14) which includes a page clamping mechanism and an output conveyor (16). The books are moved from the magazine (18) to the shearer (14) on a track (20) and are positioned successively by a reciprocating assembly (24,52) for edge trimming by the front (32) and two side knives (32,34). During processing all independently driven movements are synchronised by digital control of the rotary or linear servo or stepping motors (38,40,46,48) and offcuts are shredded for removal by suction. |
