PACKAGING MATERIAL HAVING EXCELLENT GAS BARRIERNESS

PURPOSE: To obtain a packaging material having excellent gas barrierness and suitable e.g. for the packaging of chemicals such as medicines by applying an inorganic thin film to a plastic material made of a cycloolefin copolymer containing not less than a specific amount of a cycloolefin. CONSTITUTION: A plastic material made of a cycloolefin copolymer containing >=30mol% of a cycloolefin is coated with an inorganic thin film such as a thin film of silicon oxide having a thickness of e.g. 0.05-0.14μm. The inorganic thin film is preferably applied by forming a plasma of an organic silicon compound such as a vinylalkoxysilane by a low-temperature plasma-forming method, treating a plastic material with the plasma to form a film of an organic silicon compound polymer on the surface of the plastic material and applying a silicon oxide film to the surface of the organic silicon compound polymer.
