PURPOSE: To provide an optical film useful for optical elements having plural optical performances within the same plane by irradiating a liquid crystalline high-polymer film formed on a substrate with light and controlling the form of orientation during the time from formation of the liquid crystalline high- polymer film to immobilization of the form of orientation. CONSTITUTION: A phenol/tetrachloroethane (60/40 by weight) soln. of 17wt.% of the liquid crystalline high-polymer compsn. contg., for example, a liquid crystalline high-polymer compd. A and a photoreactive compd. B at a weight ratio of 98:2 is prepd. This soln. is applied on a glass plate having a polyimide layer and is then dried, by which the photoreactive liquid crystalline high- polymer film is obtd. A photomask is placed and is irradiated with UV light and thereafter, the film is subjected to a heat treatment to form twisted nematic orientation. The film is then cooled to immobilize the form of the orientation. The Δn.d of the optical film is 880nm and the twist angle is -130 deg. in the parts irradiated with the UV light and -20 deg. in the mask parts. |
