PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an efficient and compact optical system for high resolution projection,-type display of full colors, which uses a reflection type birefringent spatial light modulator such as a liquid crystal bulb. SOLUTION: An optical system is provided with reflecting birefringent light bulbs 26, 27 and 28 arranged in the constitution to provide an advantage of high resolution color display, a polarized light beam divider 22, color image coupling prisms 30, 31 and 32, a lighting system 18, a projection lens 38 color/ contrast control filters 43, 44, 45 and 46 and a screen 39. Particularly, it contains a color dividing prism assembly having plural output surfaces, and a separate color component is oriented through this assembly, and is reflected by the respective light bulbs. Color absorbing filters are arranged on the respective output surfaces, and absorb a color component noncorresponding to colors turned to the respective output surfaces. |
