INSERTION TOOL COATED WITH DIAMOND AND ITS PRODUCTION

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide diamond-coated cutting tool inserts simple and efficient from the viewpoint of cost, and a method of manufacturing them. SOLUTION: A substrate 204 of durable and diamond adherent material having a substantially smooth surface 206 is obtained, and the smooth surface 206 is coated with a diamond layer 222 using any known CVD technique. The substrate 204 coated with diamond is partitioned with a laser beam 302 into multiple inserts of desired geometries. The diamond-coated inserts have a top surface entirely coated with a surface layer of diamond of a first thickness, and at least one rake face which is not diamond-coated beyond the surface layer of diamond.
