PURPOSE: To prevent a wrong decision due to confusion caused between a pattern to be produced and its similar pattern by collating these two patterns with each other to extract the existence feature parts and non-existence feature parts and then collating the existence feature parts with a thin pattern to add together with the extracted thin existence feature part and the non-existence feature parts and to produce a feature dictionary. CONSTITUTION: The 1st and 2nd existence feature parts 75 and 77 are sent in sequence to a thin feature part extraction circuit of a contraction part from an existence feature part memory, and a thin character 74 is sent to the thin feature part extraction circuit from a contraction circuit. The thin feature part extraction circuit secures the matching of patterns between the part 75 and the character 74 and also between the part 77 and the character 74 respectively to extract a thin feature part and then sends the thin existence feature parts 79 and 80 to an addition processing circuit. At the same time, the 1st and 2nd non-existence feature parts 76 and 78 are sent to the addition processing circuit form a non-existence feature part memory. Thus the addition processing circuit adds together all feature parts 79, 80, 76 and 78 to produce a feature dictionary 82.
