<p>PURPOSE: To inexpensively obtain glyoxylic acid ester in one stage, useful as a synthetic raw material for a medicine, agrochemical and cosmetic, a synthetic raw material for organic chemicals, etc., by oxidizing an ethylene glycol monoether compound with molecular oxygen in a vapor phase. CONSTITUTION: (A) An ethylene glycol monoether compound (R is an alkyl, an aryl or an alkoxyalkyl) of the formula, ROCH2 CH2 OH (R is an alkyl, an aryl or an alkoxyalkyl) (e.g. ethylene glycol monoethyl ether, ethylene glycol monophenyl ether, diethylene glycol monoethyl ether, etc.), is oxidized with molecular oxygen in a vapor phase to give a glyoxylic acid ester of the formula. The oxidation reaction is preferably carried out in the presence of a solid catalyst (preferably vanadium, niobium, chromium, manganese, iron, cobalt, nickel, platinum, etc.). The amount of the component B used is preferably 0.5 to 10 times mols as much as the number of mols of the component A.</p> |
