PURPOSE: To more exactly find a range at the time of macro photographing at a camera for which the optical axis of a focus detecting optical system and the optical axis of a photographing optical system are comparatively widely horizontally deviated. CONSTITUTION: Concerning the automatic focus detecting device for camera which is provided with a photographic lens 13 for varying a focal distance and a passive AF module 18 equipped with a pair of image formation lens arranged while being mutually separated just for a base line length and a pair of line sensors 27 and 28 for forming a subject owing to the respective image formation lenses and performs a range finding operation based on data owing to the subject photodetected by the respective line sensors 27 and 28, this device is provided with a ROM storing parallax control data set based on the amount of a position change between the light receiving areas at the time of making object light incident to the line sensors 27 and 28 within an object distance range at the time of ordinary photographing mode and a macro photographing mode and a selection correcting means 50 for selecting any photoreceptor element group to be used for the range finding operation out of a lot of photoreceptor elements consisting of the respective line sensors 27 and 28 based on the parallax control data from this ROM.
