PURPOSE: To produce a magnetic recording medium excellent in electromagnetic transducing characteristics such as output and C-N ratio and to produce a thin layer magnetic recording medium excellent in such characteristics, ensuring smooth contact with a head and having satisfactory shelf stability. CONSTITUTION: A thixotropic coating liq. for a non-recording layer contg. powder dispersed in a binder and a thixotropic coating liq. for a recording layer contg. ferromagnetic powder dispersed in a binder are separately prepd. The ratio of the shearing stress of each of the coating liqs. at 10<4> sec<-1> to that at 10sec<-1> is between 100 and 3. The coating liq. for a non-recording layer is applied on a substrate and dried and then the coating liq. for a recording layer is applied so as to attain <=1.0μm dry thickness.
