PURPOSE: To obtain a magnetic recording tape having satisfactory electromagnetic transducing characteristics and less liable to a change especially of running durability and a change of running performance at the time of storage in an environment at high temp. and humidity. CONSTITUTION: A nonmagnetic layer consisting essentially of nonmagnetic powder and a binder is formed on one side of a nonmagnetic substrate together with at least one magnetic layer consisting essentially of ferromagnetic metal powder and a binder formed on the nonmagnetic layer, and a back coating layer consisting essentially of nonmagnetic powder and a binder is formed on the other side of the substrate. In the resultant magnetic recording tape, the total thickness of the magnetic layer is 0.05-0.9μm, the nonmagnetic powder in the back coating layer consists essentially of carbon black and an alkaline earth metallic salt and the resin binder of the back coating layer contains vinyl chloride resin, cellulosic resin and/or polyurethane resin.
