PURPOSE: To obtain a high sensitivity torque sensor in which the number of components and the size are reduced while simplifying the assembling work. CONSTITUTION: A magnetostrictive member 12 has fixing parts 12a at the opposite ends thereof and secured, on the rear side of the fixing part 12a, tightly to a shaft 11 through a screw 14. The magnetostrictive member 12 is secured while inclining by 45 deg. against the axis of the shaft 11. The magnetostrictive member 12 exhibits magnetostrictive effect, i.e., the magnetic characteristics vary upon application of stress. A detection coil 15 is disposed between the opposite fixing parts 12a of the magnetostrictive member 12 while being applied with an excitation coil 16 in the outer periphery of the detection coil 15. When a current is fed to the excitation coil 16, a magnetic path is established through the magnetostrictive member 12→the shaft 11→the magnetostrictive member 12 and an electromotive force is induced between the output terminals of the detection coil 15.
