PURPOSE: To obtain a luminance control method and device therefor by which luminance control of each display follows up without altering a sampling speed and extinction table of an A/D converter, at the time of making plural displays simultaneously emit light in the case that no driver port is provided corresponding to the plural displays. CONSTITUTION: In a display consisting of VFD(Vacuum Fluorescent Display) 3, LED 9 and a bulb 7 at least, an extinction circuit 19 controls the luminance of VFD 3 in terms of hardware by directly inputting an analog signal from a rheostat 11, and every time when a digital signal of the rheostat 11 from A/D is inputted every 10msec, a computer 20 obtains the number of steps of the rheostat 11 for the following 10msec, and in the case the obtained number of steps is 5 or more, the luminance data of the number of the steps corresponding to the digital value inputted this time is read from memory 15 and is outputted to LED 9 and bulb 7.
