<p>An error notification system (7) operated independently of a connected computer (7) receives signals indicating an error condition in operation of the computer (7), matches the signal with a prerecorded message (94), and dials phone numbers (95) from a priority list of responsible parties. When a call is answered, the notification system announces the message (103), informing the answering agent of the error condition, and requests a response requiring the person (98). If the requested response is not given, the system dials the phone number next in priority (101), and so on, until a person answers and provides the human response.
