Process for impregnating hydrated fibrous organic materials comprises the following stages: (a) heating the material by appropriate means such as conduction using a hot surface or with a condensing vapour film or with a circulating hot liquid, or using high frequency waves; (b) instantaneously putting the preheated material under vacuum to cause auto-evaporation of water to create a micro-pipes of steam in the fibrous material; (c) introducing the solution to be injector at a temperature equal to or slightly higher than that of the material, before or after the evacuation; and (d) rapid pressurisation of the treatment vessel to introduce the solution into the micro-pipes formed earlier by evacuation. Also claimed are: apparatus to carry out the above process containing a heating chamber "CC", a chamber under vacuum "EV", a separation and recovery device for the injected solution "EG" under pressure, a pump assembly and a condenser. Use of the process to operate such apparatus to impregnate fibrous or tissue, organic or inorganic materials with a solvent which can be water or any liquid which can be evaporated by heating after depressurisation, and which can dissolve the substance chosen for the impregnation.
