A roof includes a roof deck and a plurality of roofing shingles (10, 56, 58, 60) where the roofing shingles (10, 56, 58, 60) have the appearance of a wooden shake shingle and comprise organic, resinous material, preferably a plastic material, in an amount within the range of from about 16 to about 24 percent by weight, and a filler material in an amount within the range of from about 76 to about 84 percent by weight. The roof provides a Class A fire barrier when tested according to ASTM test E108-93 for flame spread, burning brand, and intermittent flame.
