The method of influencing the ink-trapping behaviour of ink-carrying components of a printing unit in a rotary printing machine comprising the following steps: first of all the drive of an inking unit (1) effected by the printing-unit cylinders (8,10,12) is disconnected at a clutch location (15), then a printing forme is directly imaged on a printing-forme cylinder (8) inside the rotary printing machine. Finally, the drive connection between inking unit (1) and printing-unit cylinders (8,10,12) is re-established at the clutch location (15) upon completion of the direct-imaging phase inside the rotary printing machine. The invention also extends to apparatus for carrying out the method.
