The invention relates to a selective catalyst for the aromatisation of aliphatic or alicyclic hydrocarbons with at least 6 carbon atoms in the longest chain and for dehydrating alkanes in alkenes. The novel catalyst is a porous composite consisting of an oxide of a transition metal from the IV, V or VI sub-group of the periodic system of elements and carbon, in which the catalyst has an area of 10 to 1000 m<2>/g. In the process, a mixture of oxides, hydroxides, alkoxides or compounds of a transition metal convertible into oxides and carbon are heat-treated in the temperature range from 800 to 1400 DEG C until a porous composite is formed and then treated with hydrogen or a hydrogen-containing gas. Production using a sol-gel process is also described. The preferred field of application of the catalysts is the production of toluene, o-xylene and ethyl benzene with excellent selectivity. |
