The suspension system has a triangular track control arm with front and rear guide rod struts (2,3) of which the rear strut (3) is longitudinally deformable to absorb energy above a predetermined pressure strain limit. When the rear strut undergoes longitudinal deformation following vehicle impact with the wheel running straight the part of the front wheel (6) lying at the back in the travel direction is swivelled sideways outwards by the track rod (8). This reduces the likelihood of the wheel penetrating into the passenger cell.
