Prevention of total discharge of multi-cell battery e.g. for electric motor powered vehicle

A process for preventing the full discharge of a multi-cell battery has the following steps: (1) to obtain the voltages of each cell, (2) to compare each voltage with a reference one, (3) to generate a blocking signal if one voltage lies below the reference, the presence of the signal causing the load current to be switched off. The reference voltage need not be constant and may depend on a current, which is determined within a safety operating region by the battery unit.
