A process is disclosed for driving the exciting coil of an electromagnetically driven reciprocating piston pump used as a fuel injection device. The exciting coil is excited by high frequency pulses generated by a current regulating circuit and each pulse causes an abrupt move of the armature driven by the exciting coil. The current regulating circuit regulates the exciting current that flows through the exciting coil depending on a current set value curve. Each pulse of the current set value curve has a progressively rising flank to which corresponds a progressively rising flank of the exciting current pulse in the exciting coil. The current set value curve is controlled in such a way that the exciting current does not change faster than the mutual inductance-limited, maximum current variation possible at the minimum voltage available at the exciting coil.
