The invention proposes a novel process and a novel cylinder mill with two milling units arranged side by side. At least one of the milling units is a double mill having an inner guide roller (11) and two outer superimposed milling rollers (12, 14) adjustable in relation to the inner guide roller. The novel system proposes a 6 or 5-cylinder mill instead of the prior art 8-cylinder type. The base of the cylinder mill is in the form of a bridge so that the drive motor (8) can be fitted in and on the base itself or thereunder. By the formation of pillow blocks or "3-cylinder sets", the new cylinder mill design makes it possible to reduce vibration and noise by the fitting of damping components. The novel cylinder mill is of about the same height as the prior art 4-cylinder mill.
