In a rolling, e.g. ball, journal bearing, wherein at one or both axial ends a lubricant retaining or dirt excluding plate 22 is mounted by one edge thereof on one race-ring, 12, and has its other edge concentric with, and rubbing against or lying with small clearance adjacent, a surface of the other race-ring, the plate is abutted against said one ring, after the rings and rolling bodies have been assembled, and laser beam welded to said one ring. The beam may be projected from a solid state laser. Spot laser welding may be effected at equi-spaced locations around the plate, the plate and race-ring being rotated, between welds, with respect to a stationary laser. As shown, the rings 11, 12 are of 1% C, 1¢% Cr and the plate 22 of mild steel. Before through-hardening, race and cylindrical surfaces 14-19 of the rings, and conical chamfers 21 of the outer ring 12 are turned; and after hardening, the race surfaces 14, 15 are finish ground. The bearing is then assembled and, if desired, lubricated Each plate 22, having a conical portion 24 so angled that the plate only contacts the chamfer 21 at its periphery, is loaded against the chamfer to ensure full peripheral contact and then spot laser beam welded to the ring at its periphery. |
