Random or block polycarbonate-carbamates contain residues of (A) an alkylidene bisphenol, (B) carbonic acid, and (C) an N,N1-dialkylamino diphenyl sulphone. Residues of other dihydric phenols or dihydric alcohols (including unsaturated dihydric alcohols) and also other diamines may also be present. Comprehensive lists of preferred reactants are given. In Examples (I) and (II) phosgene is passed into a mixture of sodium dithionite, phenol, bisphenol A and methylene chloride. A slurry of N,N1 - dimethyl - 4,41 - diaminodiphenylsulphone in methylene chloride is added followed by NaOH and triethylamine. The polymer is isolated from the organic layer.
