PURPOSE: To obtain the subject compound useful as a raw material for the monomer of polybenzobisoxazole in high selectivity from inexpensive raw materials, by reducing a 1-alkoxy-2,4-dinitrobenzene with hydrogen in the presence of an alcohol, an acid and a specific catalyst. CONSTITUTION: This compound expressed by formula II (R<1> is the same as R) is obtained by reducing (D) a compound of formula I (R is a 1-4C alkyl) with (E) hydrogen pref. in dimethyl sulfoxide as solvent in the presence of (A) a 1-4C alcohol, (B) an acid such as sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, phosphoric acid, formic acid, acetic acid, propionic acid or methanesulfonic acid and (C) a group VIII metal catalyst such as platinum/carbon or palladium/ carbon. |
