PURPOSE: To automatically supplement ink in a printing apparatus equipped with a printing head flying ink particles in accordance with image signals. CONSTITUTION: When it is detected that the ink remains little in a printing head 5, the printing action is temporarily interrupted, and a carriage 3 is moved to an exchange position. A pinion gear 8 is rotated, and a printing head exchange lever 7 pushes a spare printing head 6 out from a holding part 2a of a frame 2, whereby the printing head 5 loaded on the carriage 3 is pressed by the spare printing head 6 and moved to a rear part of the printing apparatus. When the spare printing head 6 reaches the exchange position of the carriage 3, a driving source is stopped. Then, the driving source is reversed to rotate a lead screw 1, thereby returning the spare printing head 6 to the position where the initial printing head 5 is interrupted. The exchange of the printing heads is completed in this manner. |
