PURPOSE: To improve exfoliation corrosion resistance and stress corrosion cracking resistance by subjecting an alloy containing specific amounts of Mg, Mn, Cr, Ti, and Al to cooling, cold rolling, heating, heat treatment, and cooling under respectively specified conditions. CONSTITUTION: An alloy ingot having a composition consisting of, by weight, 4-6% Mg, 0.3-1% Mn, 0.05-0.3% Cr, 0.005-0.03% Ti, and the balance essentially Al, is subjected to homogenizing heat treatment and to hot rolling. The resulting rolled stock is cooled through the temp. region from the temp. at the time of the coiling of rolled stock to 100 deg.C at <=30 deg.C/hr cooling rate and then cold- rolled at 15-30% draft. The resulting cold rolled stock is heated at <=40 deg.C/hr heating rate and subjected to final heat treatment at 220-250 deg.C for 4-24hr, followed by cooling at <=20 deg.C cooling rate. By this method, the Al-Mg alloy in whichβ-phases are uniformly precipitated and high corrosion resistance and high strength, suitable for structural material, are provided can be produced.
