PURPOSE: To obtain the subject compound high in quality and low in content of a harmful material by reducing an excess amount of monohalogenated acetic acid and a caustic alkali, by adding an alkylene oxide to an alcohol using a quaternary ammonium salt as a catalyst. CONSTITUTION: (A) An aliphatic monohydric alcohol of the formula: R-OH (R is a 1-24C alkyl or alkenyl) is allowed to react with (B) a 2-4C alkylene oxide under a pressure of 0.5-10kg/cm<2> and at 40-90 deg.C in the presence of (C) a quaternary ammonium salt having a group of formula I (R<1> -R<3> are each a 1-20C linear or branched alkyl, aralkyl or aryl; X is hydroxyl or a 2-20C fatty acid residue) to obtain (D) an alkyl alkoxylate of the formula; R-O-(AO)m -H (A is a 2-4C alkylene; (n) is average addition mole number and is 1-20), then the alkyl alkoxylate is allowed to react with a monohalogenated acetic acid (salt) in the presence of a caustic alkali under remaining the component C to be carboxymethylated to obtain (E) an ether carboxylate of formula II. |
