A cooling system suitable for secondary batteries is incorporated within the cell structure. First and second chambers (1, 2) are interconnected by a series of tubes (5) through which the cooling medium is circulated. The cooling medium flows into the first chamber (1) through an input tube (3) and leaves the second chamber via an output tube (4), the mouth of which projects into the chamber to create an air space above the cooling medium. This air space may be connected to a corresponding air space in the first chamber by a pressure equalising tube (6). The cooling system is sealed, but preferably is provided with a pressure relief vent (7). The two chambers (1, 2) may project through the cell wall and have provision for observing the coolant.
